WORD SUBSITUTION DISORDER

Word Substitution Disorder is a hypothetical mental illness. It proposes that, without realizing they’re doing it, sufferers substitute ‘words in their head’ for words they intend to say.

When we speak, our brain searches among alternatives for the right word, associations and other thoughts may be present, and how this relates to the processes we call ‘consciousness’ is complex. This happens very rapidly and we are largely unaware of it.

Word Substitution Disorder is a misfire. It is not an inner voice that tells us what people ‘ really think’, the words substituted are parts of the extensive thought processes going on in the background when people speak. It lacks coherence, grammar, sometimes even sense and relevance.

But because the words substituted are not random, Word Substitution Disorder can reveal and provoke, take the lid off, show us things normally hidden.

As a mental illness, Word Substitution Disorder articulates, pushes back, unbalances, reminds us that ‘normal’ society walks on thin ice. Without a familiar label or diagnosis, it is harder to dismiss.
